NBA Draft prospect, DeAndre Ayton

In 2010, I founded the YouTube channel "Disabled Sports," covering personal passions of mine (MMA, boxing, basketball, football and baseball). I average 3 posts a week and have grown a cult following, with 600 subscribers actively engaging with my content. At the time, I felt that the media failed to look beyond the surface and was missing the big picture time and time again. My hope was to bring a unique perspective to sports, one that the mainstream media was not giving, and to make the sport once again the hero. I continued to expand my "Disabled Sports" brand in 2014, founding a personal blog.

Throughout the 2017-18 season, the Arizona Wildcats primarily used DeAndre Ayton in the low post or as a screener in the pick and roll. For instance, the point guard will bring the ball up to the three-point line and passes it to a big man in the mid to low post area. Once this happens, he will analyze how the defender chooses to defend him. If the defender gives DeAndre space, he will face up and shoot a jumper. On the other hand, if the defender plays him tight, Ayton will attempt to back down the defender with one of his shoulders to get within comfortable range to shoot a jump hook. Another example of this is when the point guard will bring the ball up to the three-point line and passes it to another perimeter player. The second perimeter will either dump the ball into the post or give it to a third perimeter player, and he will throw it into the mid to low block to start the process of attempting to get a jump hook.

However, there are instances where Arizona used DeAndre Ayton as a screener in the pick and roll. For example, For example, the point guard would bring the ball up to the three-point line and then Ayton would set a screen. Once the pick is set, he will analyze how the defender chooses to defend him. For instance, if his defender decides to come up and cover the point guard, he can roll to the basket. On the other hand, if his defender chooses to stay back, he can pop out to the free throw line to shoot a jumper.

As a result of this, the NBA team who selects DeAndre Ayton in the draft should implement a similar system to the Arizona Wildcats. This is because Ayton has developed a habit of playing in the mid to low block or as a screener in the pick and roll that it is the quickest way for him to have an impact in the NBA. However if the NBA wants him to be further away from the basket, he would need a few months to adjust the new role. For example, DeAndre would require a significant number of repetitions over the course of many months to see if he is capable of making an NBA three and whether it can be a consistent shot.
